What is GAWIREA?

GAWIREA stands for Girls and Women in Renewable Energy Academy. It is more than just an initiative—it is a movement born from the belief that access to renewable energy and gender equality can transform entire communities. GAWIREA empowers girls, women, and youth—especially in rural and underrepresented areas of Indonesia—by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to participate in the green energy transition. We focus on education, innovation, and community-based solutions that reflect local values and environmental sustainability. Our name carries a mission: to nurture future changemakers who are not only aware of climate challenges but are also capable of solving them—starting from their own villages. Through renewable energy, we build pathways toward a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future.

When was GAWIREA established?

GAWIREA was founded in 2021, during a time when global conversations about climate action were rising—but the voices of women and rural communities in Indonesia remained largely unheard. What started as a small group of young changemakers who shared a vision for a greener and fairer future quickly evolved into a nationwide movement. Since then, GAWIREA has grown its presence across various regions, from the remote villages of Kalimantan to the heart of Papua Selatan. Each year, our journey brings new challenges, new collaborators, and new stories of impact—but our core purpose remains the same: to ensure that every girl, every woman, and every young person has the opportunity to grow, lead, and create change through renewable energy.

What we do?

At GAWIREA, we develop and implement programs that integrate renewable energy with community empowerment. Our work revolves around three core pillars: Education & Capacity Building
We organize training sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns that teach communities about sustainable energy, climate change, and practical green solutions. We especially focus on engaging girls and young women, nurturing their leadership in the energy transition. Technology for Community Resilience
We co-create low-tech, sustainable energy solutions with local people. One example is our solar-powered sago grater in Papua Selatan—a simple innovation that has transformed how local women process food and sustain their livelihoods. Youth Development & Green Jobs
Through initiatives like Movers4GreenJobs, we provide young people with the tools and knowledge to pursue careers in renewable energy. We introduce them to microgrids, solar installations, and other green technologies—making sure that the next generation is prepared to lead Indonesia toward a cleaner future.
